From my experience, studying abroad requires a lot of adjustment. Education-wise, learning takes place mostly outside of classroom; by this, I mean lecture will only prepare you for what you will be learning by yourself when at home, in lab, or while reading on the bus. Students will be assigned with readings and homework problems to expand on their understanding of the subject, and are expected to struggle through. Office hours and other resources are provided, of course, to help the struggling students. Many classes’ use-reading assignments as a tool to teach analytical and critical thinking, and those classes usually have heavy group discussion during lecture time (which often turns into a heated debate hahaha). One thing I really love is that schools and universities are not technophobic, in fact, students are encouraged to use technology in class. In fact, many classes are now fully integrated with online classroom where students are provided with resources that professor would have otherwise printed on paper; hence, slow down the use of our limited resources, as well as providing light speed information directly to your screen.

It was not that hard for me to adjust when I first started my study abroad. I had a good homestay in both Australia and the US who supported me through my struggle, and they are definitely part of the reason how I adopted the culture so readily. Different places have different cultures, and to be a part of them, you must totally immerse yourself in the society, join clubs, and meet people.

I would say that the best thing about studying abroad is that it opens my eyes to the world, now I know that it sounds very cliché, but it is true. Experiencing new culture, work style, life styles, values, living in a multicultural, multiracial, and multi-ethnicity society will put you in a new perspective; it is almost like climbing to a top of the mountain to see the whole world as a big picture, maybe not whole picture, but a bigger picture than before. You simply cannot get these experiences if you do not study abroad or live abroad.

For the time being, I am planning to work as an aerospace engineer in the United States after I complete my bachelor degree at the UW to gain some work experience before I continue my education in Germany as a graduate student.

I am studying at the University of Washington, Seattle campus.

I would suggest that you ask yourself what you are interested in, then do a few preliminary research on where would be the possible places that teach what you are interested in, then narrow down to what you are looking for specifically in a school/university. If possible, schedule a visit to the school you’re interested in, to get a feel for place and the people. Also, from personal experience, the first place you end up with, doesn’t always have to be the last place you stay. It’s ok to move around, change school, city, or even country, so do what suit you the best.
If you are struggling to find information or don’t know where to start, Union Plus is a really good resource to help guide you through the process as they did mine.
Tieca

Since the beginning, Union Plus had helped me decide where I wanted to go continue my education. They helped me coordinate with the school I was interested in, and helped me apply for the school as well as the visa. What impresses me is that they do not just ditch you after you start your school; they care about your well-being while living in another country, and continually checked in and helped me solved issues arisen at the time. The whole package of services and the after sale service from Union Plus made my transition to another country so much easier than it would have been, had I done it all myself; for that I truly appreciate their effort.
